Snapdragon

Cyrano was late for work again. In his mind he thought, " I open the door in the morning, the fall freshness so open, the beauty all around and the sounds- joy to my ears." He closed his eyes and for a moment became his senses. " Do I really need to start the car and drive to work?". With a sigh he opened his eyes and walked out through the garden, the snapdragons in full bloom. One blossom had fallen onto the path.

Cyrano picked up the strange looking flower which seemed to have a face that gaped at him. He could not help but push in the sides, making the "mouth" open and close, amused at the appearance of it talking. "Yes", the flower said then, "we CAN communicate! " Cyrano was shocked... "You talked to people?"

"People???", the flower snorted, " To Rhinos of course, there was no man in this world then!" Cyrano was amazed; " How long ago was that ?" he exclaimed. The flower sighed, " So long ago; so long... millions of years. A proud race we were-silken manes, green glossy skins and pearlmour wings shining in the sunlight. Some of us could fly, some could swim and our bellows filled the air! Alas, there was no love in us and we were deservedly dishonored. "

"Dishonored?", asked Cyrano. "Yes", said the flower, " We fought and demolished; breaking even our own laws in the end. In our intense jealousy of each other, we breathed so much fire that we attracted Proteus, the god of fire, to our over-energized planet. His star arrived on the earth and it's heat was unbearable to us. The few of our kind that survived the heat succumbed in hunger as the food supply diminished." "Oh, how horrid..." whispered Cyrano.

"But, we did get forgiven in the end as you can see...as another life form." smiled the flower. "You?" asked Cyrano,"You are a Rhino?" And, Cyrano looked at the flower again. It certainly looked like a dragon, with the soft hairy throat, as if ready to breath fire out. "My children bear proof of it too", said the Rhino. Indeed, along the stem where the flowers had been, were the dragon babies. They were soft green, with eyes closed, their long tongues sticking out ready to learn and maybe even breath out fire. Lower on the stem, the ripe fruits looked a little burnt, brown and odd looking little fellows. When you shook them, seeds flipped out of their eyes and nose. Cyrano gasped-" Little dragons they are! You really were forgiven... "
